Power Steering...

Pain in my ass!!!

A little background: The Power Steering lines came from the donor Caddy Deville.  The 4.9L PS lines hug the block behind the serpentine belt & pulleys, so using the stock caddy lines keeps them clear of the pulley system .  I used care & caution when mounting the PS lines to the new steering rack & tied them off so they would not contact the rear manifold.  At some point during the installation the flexible section of the pressure line from the pump got pressed slightly against the rear manifold.  It became painfully obvious when I drove it the exhaust shop, just as I pulled in the line burst & PS fluid began burning off the manifold....  I got the exhaust done & drove back with steering by "Arm Strong", here's what I found....

Just that little surface area & she spews out the fluid.

A closer look - not much contact at all, but enough to reek havoc.

A new PS line, stock 92 Deville - pressure side.  Not shown is the old line had to be cut to remove it.  The PS lines are fitted (bent in all kinds of directions - see above) & with the motor in my X it wasn't possible to remove the line in one piece.  So this also means I have a better chance of donkey's flying out of my butt than getting that line in the way it was.....  If you can't tell, I wasn't at all happy to have this problem - it was a complete pain to replace this line with the motor in the car.....  Ok, done whining now...

In order to get to the rack & remove the old line I had to take out the brake booster, thanx for the tip Tyre !!

Yeah !!!  The new line is in !!!!  It's easy to see how the PS lines run behind the pulleys with the new line in.

Beings I didn't want Donkey's coming out my ass, I figured it best (& easiest) to reroute the pressure line.  I carefully bent the line so that it would run up & over the motor rather than behind it.  This will eliminate any future "cook offs" cause the line doesn't even go near the exhaust manifold.

Birds eye view of the steering rack.  The pressure line is kinda straight.... it works though !!!  As you can see this is the best & only way to get to the PS line on the rack while the motor is in.
